Lathe Drive Selection Tool

The Inverter Drive Supermarket's Lathe Drive Calculator

This calculator allows you to compare a known example if your lathe operation with the performance of the same Lathe - fitted with variable speed. Entries required are only motor power and speed, all the ratios concerned to the chuck and the work piece diameter.

The results show old and new torque at the spindle as well as material velocity past the tool and tool pressure for full motor load for comparison. The calculator ignores transmission efficiency and motor overload capability. The user can compensate for losses and overload by adjusting the motor power entered and keep changing any entry to review the results.

Tips:

To reduce spindle speed and increase force available at the tool tip:

  1. Decrease the motor pulley diameter
  2. Increase the spindle pulley diameter
  3. Add an additional ratio

When using a Variable Speed Drive, you simply reduce the speed on the drive. This has the effect of increasing the force available at the tool tip from 100Hz down to 50Hz and maintaining it down to 5Hz.
